The Burton D. Morgan Foundation sponsors youth forum
02/19/2008
A nationally recognized expert in entrepreneurship will be the keynote speaker for Hudson’s Entrepreneurship Week USA observance Feb. 25.

The local event is coordinated by The Burton D. Morgan Foundation and is being held in conjunction with the dedication of the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship Research at the Hudson Library and Historical Society.

Entrepreneurship Week USA is a national effort to inspire and encourage young people to consider entrepreneurship as a career choice and to celebrate America’s unique culture of inventiveness.

Northeast Ohio has talented people providing leadership for a wide variety of exciting youth entrepreneurship education activities.

“The Burton D. Morgan Foundation supports many of these programs through its grants and believes that synergies can be achieved when teachers and program directors interact and learn from each other,” Morgan Foundation President Deborah Hoover said. “This is important work for Northeast Ohio. We hope that many of our young entrepreneurs become the innovators of tomorrow, creating companies that will change the economic landscape of the area.”

Nearly 60 representatives, including students, youth educators, regional economic development leaders and area funders are expected to attend the session at the Hudson library.

Larry Farrell, founder and CEO of the Farrell Company in Staunton, Va., will give the keynote address. Farrell, whose firm was founded to research the business practices of the great entrepreneurs of the world, has been presenting his findings to students for more than two decades. He is the author of several books, including Searching for the Spirit of Enterprise and Getting Entrepreneurial! Since 2005, he has worked closely with Junior Achievement Worldwide to develop entrepreneurship programs for middle and high school students.

John Zitzner, founder of E City and the Cleveland Entrepreneurship Preparatory School, will moderate a discussion of Entrepreneurship: Empowering High School Students. Panel members include Greg Malkin from University School and Michael Shaulis from Lake Ridge Academy and John Klipfell from the Scholarship for Entrepreneurial Engagement, based in Broadview Heights.

Hoover will moderate another panel, Young Entrepreneurs: Shaping Northeast Ohio’s Future. That panel will include Brad Whitehead, president of the Fund for Our Economic Future; Hiram College professor Steve Zabor, who heads the Northeast Ohio Collegiate Entrepreneurship Program there; and Susan Nelson, program director for NOCHE, the Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education.

The Entrepreneurship Week observance will start at 1 p.m., following the noon dedication and ribbon cutting of the Center for Entrepreneurship Research, which has been established with a $25,000 grant from The Burton D. Morgan Foundation. Hoover and Foundation Trustee J. Martin Erbaugh will speak at the dedication.

The center will provide a set of tools to help those who wish to create or manage a business. Information will be provided on every aspect of planning a business including acquiring venture capital, defining new products, market analysis, legal and tax issues, drafting a business plan and preparing financial statements.

Hudson library officials believe the center will contain the most comprehensive set of research materials on entrepreneurship available locally in one place. Library information specialists will work closely with those needing help in using the materials offered.

“The Foundation supports entrepreneurship education for youth, college students and adults across Northeast Ohio. We are particularly interested in developing entrepreneurship programs in Hudson,” Hoover said. “We view the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship Research as the future hub of these activities, bringing together budding entrepreneurs of all ages and aspirations.”
