Kenyon holds Emerging Leaders Retreat

Nearly 30 Kenyon College freshmen and sophomores recently attended the inaugural Burton D. Morgan Emerging Leaders Retreat. The students participated in workshops to develop leadership and entrepreneurship skills.

Some initially wondered what entrepreneurship had to do with the liberal arts education they chose. They quickly found an answer.

A liberal arts education, they learned, is a strong foundation for both leadership and entrepreneurship.

“Liberal arts graduates spend four years honing critical thinking, reading and writing skills,” they were told. “They learn how to think not just well but creatively.

“In a complex market environment,” college leaders said, “a person who can think laterally, understand people from multiple disciplines and communicate persuasively is well equipped to make insights that increase the odds of success.”

“The students were excited about the content and the chance to meet like-minded peers,” said Ted Rice, director of the Burton D. Morgan Emerging Leaders Program. “Within a day of return, they formed their own Emerging Leader’s Facebook page – which in the terms of their generation marks a rousing success.”
